From 1902 to 1956, the Davenport Locomotive Works produced hundreds of locomotives at their Davenport, Iowa plant. 38 of these were 4-wheeled diesel locomotives built for domestic and Canadian use. Denver & Rio Grande Western 3-foot gauge #50, built for the Sumpter Valley in 1937, is typical of prewar locomotives in the 25-ton to 35-ton range. In 1970 it left Durango for its third owner, the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad.
